“transumers are hyper-consumers driven by experiences. the fixed is replaced by an obsession with the here and now, an ever-shorter satisfaction span, and a lust to collect as many experiences as possible.”  trendwatching.com.

>> overview

transumer is an interactive work that invites participants to become a transumer – a new breed of consumer hungry for constant visual and auditory gratification. unable to remain motionless for longer than 60 secs and an attention span of 3.5 minutes, our transumers will infiltrate sydney in search of happiness. a modern day zombie, our transumers’  thirst for self satisfaction transforms them into ‘constantly moving happiness machines’, impressionable and docile as they roam the streets. guided by a 3g mobile phone equipped with augmented reality software, instructional voice-over and an immersive soundscape, the transumer journey reveals a hidden layer to the city.

transumer  utilises augmented reality by encouraging audiences to seek out a series of a.r barcode markers fixed to architecture and urban debris in the cityscape. when scanned by their mobiles, seemingly innocent looking markers reveal hidden content that subverts the purpose of that inanimate object. presented with a gratuitous overdose of 'advertising pleasure' relating to each item, our transumers begin to crave the wrong objects for the wrong reasons, testing their susceptibility to aggressive advertising tactics. as they continue to consume the city, their needs and desires become increasingly irrational as the quest for happiness intensifies

transumer  aims to interrogate in darkly humerous ways the soft tyranny of consumer culture and launches a radical campaign that disrupts our illusion of choice. this project will see us partner with world leading technology institute hitlab nz, a multi-national advanced research and development laboratory who specialise in augmented reality for mobile phones
